In an economy on trending downward spiral, Trophy Bikes co-owner Michael Mcgettigan has found the business to whether the storm. As a bike store owner specializing in the sale and repair of commuter bikes, he is involved in the one are of transportation that always has free parking.
“Driving a car is a depressing grown up thing like a mortgage,” McGettigan said, “There time is over.”
According to McGettigan anyone can bike a significant amount of miles and because of that the need for the “house on wheels [cars]” is non existent. Bikes are a cheeper way of a travel.
“We are the only business that actually benefits from the recession,” he said
McGettigan is a high school drop out, former piano tutor, bandmate, reporter, and now bike shop owner who fell into the business, but overtime his shop has become a staple in the community developing many steady customers.
“That’s Sam the Rabbit man,” Mcgettian said with a smile of recognition as a man in a bright orange snow cap approached his storefront. “He’s a total character.”
Mcgettian has developed a relationship with his customers and his customers have developed a relationship with their bikes that keeps them returning for new vehicles or repairs.
“It’s fun to watch people change and grow up.” He said.
Ultimately Mcgettian can place the success of his business upon one phrase about his products.
“When you get a bike you get on a machine that can force the world to rotate underneath you. - It makes everything simple.”
