Concert Attendance & the Economy - The Fan

The economic downfall affects not only the lives of the average bill payer or worker, but also the lives of youth concertgoers.

“I’ve definitely been going to fewer and fewer shows,” said Carly Vaniver, a 15-year-old Philadelphia native, “and I do think it’s because of the economic downfall.”

Vaniver recently paid $12.65 for a ticket to see one of her favorite underground rap artists, T. Mills, play at the Theater of Living Arts on South St., and said she probably would not have attended if it would have cost her much more.

While ticket prices vary for each venue and each artist, fans generally believe that there is a certain fairness to that method.

“For a smaller show, I’d say $15 to $20 is fair. But for a bigger performer, I’d pay anywhere between $40 and $80,” said Vaniver.

The dedication of a music fan, even in these hard times, is easily admirable. In Vaniver’s words, “Some people would do anything to see their favorite band or artist live. Even if it means spending money they don’t have.”
