The Bikes Will Ride On: Segment One- Fairmount

In the midst of the recession success can be found in a bike shop on Fairmount Ave. run by long time friends Shelly Salamon and Chris Harne. Specializing in repairs, Fairmount bike shop has found great success in mere two years since there opening.
According to Salamon, to ride a Bike in the city of Philadelphia, other than sheer man power, requires no money in regards to travel or parking, which makes for a very appealing option when people are pinching their pennies.
“A recession is awesome for bikes, People are trying to save money and Bikes are cheeper than cars- septa is expensive- Bikes are a really good place to put your dollar.”she said.
Salamon, a former Temple University film major and waitress by night, never anticipated that she would be drawn to the world of bikes but when she discovered that the Fairmount community was lacking a shop her ideals quickly changed.
“I got the idea in my head and I couldn’t get it out.”
From conception to opening, Shelly’s idea took 9 months to produce.
“Like a baby,” she joked.
With little advertising other than word of mouth and investments from friends and family, Fairmount Bicycles opened quietly but soon picked up speed in the community.
“Every months been better than the last excluding winter that is,” said Shelly with a laugh, “Each day I was surprised but people kept coming in.”
